Level 5: Advanced

Student Characteristics:

Students are able to communicate effectively in various settings with familiar and new topics. They have good comprehension skills and an expanded vocabulary. Although furthur linguistic refinements are necessary, these students are able to understand concrete and abstract concepts pertaining to all content areas. Errors are infrequent and do not reduce communication.

What teachers should do for Level 5 students:

  1. Allow students to lead group discussions
  2. Encourage independent use of reference materials and technology
  3. Provide explicit grammar instruction
  4. Provide opportunities for student generated presentations
  5. Provide a variety of realistic writing opportunities in a variety of genre

Remember:

  • Students at this level need ongoing development of background knowledge and must be challenged academically.

Things All ELL learners need:

  • Daily Vocabulary Instruction: 3 new words a day
  • Explicit Forms of Academic English: Point out differences between formal and informal language/ post vocabulary in the classroom
  • Bridging From Prior Knowledge: Connect new learning to their own knowledge
  • Guided Interaction: Time for students to talk/ using SDAIE strategies such as: Think, Pair, Share, Numbered Heads Together, and graphic organizers
  • Assessment that Informs Instruction: this determines the next steps for teaching
  • Meaningful Content, Thematic Instruction: link subjects to real life that are not random and cover broad themes
  • Respect for Home Language and Culture: Give opportunities to celebrate others' cultures
